A sophisticated cellphone phishing syndicate operating from a prominent Durban beachfront hotel has been dismantled in a multi-agency operation led by KwaZulu-Natal police.
Five suspects — three foreign nationals and two local women — were arrested following an intelligence-driven investigation into alleged large-scale cyber fraud targeting unsuspecting victims.
KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, confirmed the arrests, stating that the operation was the result of coordinated efforts between SAPS KZN Crime Intelligence, Commercial Crime Investigations, Durban Central SAPS, and the Durban Metro Police Tactical Support Unit.
“It is alleged that the suspects were part of a phishing syndicate responsible for defrauding victims through cellphone-based scams. The team acted on intelligence and successfully traced the operation to a beachfront hotel, where the suspects had booked three rooms earlier this month,” said Netshiunda.
Police seized multiple cellphones and laptops believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes. Preliminary investigations suggest the operation may be linked to a broader network involved in financial and cyber-related offences.
The suspects are expected to face charges of fraud, theft, and contravention of the Cybercrimes Act. They are due to appear in court next week as investigations continue.
Police have reiterated their warning to the public to remain vigilant against phishing scams and to avoid sharing personal or banking details via unsolicited messages or calls.
