After months of investigation and legal proceedings, a Zimbabwean national has been convicted of murder at the Durban Regional Court for fatally stabbing his compatriot on 1 November 2023 in Greenwood Park.
The victim was discovered lying beside Celtic Road, suffering from a stab wound to the neck. Despite being rushed to Addington Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased on arrival.
According to Detective Sergeant Lerato Ndlela, the investigating officer assigned to the case, critical information gathered during the investigation led to the identification of the suspect. However, before he could be arrested, the suspect fled South Africa and returned to Zimbabwe.

Greenwood Park SAPS Communications Officer, Constable Basha Nyembe, confirmed that Sergeant Ndlela obtained an arrest warrant and worked closely with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to initiate extradition proceedings. She said: “On 30 October 2024, Sergeant Ndlela travelled to the Beitbridge Border Post, where she received the suspect from Interpol officials.”
Following his return to the country, the suspect stood trial and was convicted of murder earlier this month. He was subsequently sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Constable Nyembe praised Sergeant Ndlela for her dedication: “Her hard work and perseverance led to this conviction. It’s a testament to her commitment to justice.”
She also acknowledged the efforts of the newly appointed Station Commander, Colonel Mbongeni Samuel Khalishwayo, noting his active role in ensuring all officers perform their duties with integrity and diligence. The conviction marks a significant achievement for the Greenwood Park SAPS, demonstrating the importance of cross-border cooperation and persistent investigative work in solving serious crimes.
