Taxi driver hijacked
Ntabamhlophe SAPS are investigating a case of carjacking after a 60-year-old taxi driver was held up at gunpoint and robbed of his taxi on Tuesday evening. It is alleged that the taxi driver was dropping off passengers when he was approached by two armed men who then chased away the passengers and got inside the taxi, instructing the driver to drive. The taxi driver was dropped off at the Wembezi turn-off unharmed. No suspects were caught and police are still searching for the stolen taxi.

Body found with gunshots in open field
Weenen SAPS are investigating a case of murder after a body with gunshot wounds was discovered by the community in an open field in Phofini, Weenen. The body was already decomposing and three empty cartridges were found nearby. The body has not yet been identified and the motive of the killing is unknown to police.

Livestock thief axed to death
Colenso SAPS are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder after a suspect was brutally axed to death by members of the community. It is alleged that a group of men had been caught trying to steal livestock at the Gugwini Farm on Pieters Road in Colenso on Wednesday evening, 13 October. While trying to load the cattle into the vehicle, members of the community arrived armed with axes and caught two suspects. The mob of people then axed one of the two men to death, while the other managed to escape with injuries. No arrests have been made and police are still collecting statements.

Armed robbery at Bergville business
Bergville SAPS are searching for five armed suspects who robbed a Bergville business situated along R74 on Thursday evening, 14 October. It is alleged that five suspects armed with a firearm had entered the business and demanded money. The suspects fled the scene with an unknown amount of money and cigarettes. No one was injured.

Brother witnesses three-year-old sister’s rape
A three-year-old Amangwe toddler was brutally raped at her homestead on Thursday morning, 14 October.  Amangwe SAPS in the Loskop area were called to the homestead after the three-year-old’s brother, 5, had witnessed a man rape his sister. The five-year-old told his mother, who had arrived home after attending a funeral. The police were immediately contacted and statements were taken. The five-year-old gave the police a description of the man and told police that the man is known to the family. A case of rape is being investigated and no arrests have been made.

Motorist injured in shooting on Pieters Road
Colenso SAPS are investigating a case of attempted murder after a motorist was shot at while travelling along Pieters Road on Friday, 15 October. The motorist sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg during the ambush fire from an unknown vehicle. No arrests have been made and the motive of the shooting is unknown to the police at this stage.

Woman killed in armed robbery
Ntabamhlophe SAPS are investigating a case of murder after Swazi Malevu, 38, was gunned down in a home invasion on Sunday evening, 17 October. It is alleged that Malevu had been at her boyfriend’s home when four armed suspects gained entry into the house, demanding cash. The boyfriend owned a tuck-shop and the four men fled the scene with cash and a cellphone, before shooting Malevu in the head. No arrests have been made.

Man found beaten to death
Wembezi SAPS are investigating a case of murder after Mlungisi Trevor Cebekhulu, 38, was brutally beaten to death at his home in Wembezi on Sunday evening, 17 October. No arrests have been made and the motive is unknown at this stage.

Police search for alleged killer
Amangwe SAPS are looking for a man alleged to have killed his ex-wife, 36-year-old Phindile Thwala. Thwala was found dead at her home in Nkomokazini, Estcourt, on Sunday evening, 17 October. Thwala was reported to have a history of domestic violence with her ex-husband. Police followed up information on the suspect, but he was not found at the home address given.

Body found in parked vehicle
A case of murder is being investigated bythe Bergville Police after a security guard, during his routine patrols, discovered a body in a vehicle parked along the R74 on Thursday evening, 14 October. A single gunshot wound to his shoulder was discovered by police. The motive of the killing is unknown as the deceased’s belongings were still in the vehicle. The deceased has not yet been identified.

Armed robbery at Estcourt business
Estcourt is investigating a case of armed robbery after a 30-year-old man was held up at an Estcourt business on Albert Street. It is alleged that the man had been collecting the weekend’s takings from the forecourt to the office at the main building and whilst walking to the building, he was approached by an armed man who ordered him to lie on the ground whilst a second grabbed the till safe, fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made.

Rapist to spend ten years in jail
Xolani Mfanyana, 21, was sentenced to ten years at the Pongola Regional Court,
on 18 October, for the rape of an eight-year-old child. On 29 June 2020, an eight-year-old girl was visiting her friend’s home when her friend’s uncle called her to another room
and asked her to remove her skirt, she declined and he overpowered and raped her. The man was caught by one of his siblings who went and informed the mother of the victim. A case of rape was opened at Pongola SAPS for investigation. On the following day, investigations led the Pongola Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit to the arrest of the accused who was positively linked to the case.
