Online sellers are being urged to exercise caution when advertising and selling goods through social media platforms and online marketplaces following an increase in incidents involving criminals posing as legitimate buyers. According to Phoenix SAPS spokesperson Nadia Ebrahim, police have observed a rise in cases where unsuspecting sellers are robbed, defrauded or have their property stolen during arranged transactions.

Ebrahim explained that suspects often make contact through social media, messaging applications or online advertising platforms and arrange meetings under the guise of purchasing advertised items. “In many instances, the so-called buyer may request to meet in isolated or unfamiliar locations, produce fake proof of payment, distract the seller while accomplices steal the item, inspect the item and flee without paying, or arrange for a courier or third party to collect the item before payment has cleared,” she said.

Ebrahim encouraged members of the public to take precautionary measures when conducting online sales transactions. She advised sellers to arrange meetings in public, well-populated areas and avoid meeting at their home addresses where possible. “Sellers are urged to verify that payment has reflected in their bank accounts before handing over any goods. Be cautious of buyers who attempt to rush transactions or create a sense of urgency. Inform a family member or friend of your meeting arrangements and, where possible, arrange to meet at a police station or another secure location,” she said.

Ebrahim further encouraged sellers to trust their instincts and terminate any transaction that appears suspicious. “The safety of our community remains a shared responsibility. By remaining alert and taking the necessary precautions, we can reduce opportunities for criminals to prey on innocent citizens,” added Ebrahim.

Members of the public who fall victim to online marketplace scams or who have information relating to suspects involved are urged to report the matter to their nearest police station or contact the SAPS Crime Stop line on 10111.
