A 36-year-old woman died in a Cato Crest shack fire on Sunday morning. Over 45 shacks were completely destroyed in the blaze which left over a hundred people homeless.
According to residents, the deceased, Mathebele Letela, a foreign national from Lesotho had been renting the shack. “We have lost everything, including our identity books and now we have to start gathering material to rebuild our homes,” said the residents. Ward 101 councillor Mzi Ngiba said the homeless residents who lost all their belongings in the fire have made temporary arrangements to stay with their friends and families. “The eThekwini’s Disaster Management has been on-site and we are working on the list of people who were affected. The material has been ordered for them to rebuild their homes. As the councillor I have been assisting those who are affected. This is another unfortunate incident, as we have had about five fires which have destroyed homes since the beginning of this year. I can assure all those affected that they will get assistance, and building material to rebuild their homes,” said Cllr Ngiba. The exact cause of the fire is not known at this stage, the relevant authorities are investigating. Cato Manor SAPS communications officer Captain C.A. Sibiya said they are investigating an inquest docket following the incident.
