Megasen Roland Chetty and Sarasvathi Belinda Pillay who stand accused of defrauding holiday makers in Tongaat, Chatsworth, Phoenix, Malvern and Town Hill are due back in court next month, after they were released on R5 000 bail at the Durban Magistrate’s Court.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said Chetty, 38, and Pillay, 47, will reappear on 7 July, and called on other victims of fraudsters to come forward. “The couple’s court appearance follows a string of fraud cases that were committed since February 2018 to October 2019. The suspects were positively linked to 14 counts of fraud that they had committed at different areas around eThekwini among others.” Gwala said their modus operandi was to promise people to secure discounted holidays abroad and locally. The total amount of cash that was defrauded is R900 000. The dockets opened were transferred to the Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation for further investigation. On the morning of 28 May, the suspects were arrested and appeared in court. “We are appealing to other people who are victims of similar scams to contact the investigating officer Constable Durugiah on 082-334-8454,” said Gwala.
