State attorney, Bonga Mbokazi, has chosen to challenge the post-mortem results of Mondli Majola’s death as the state claimed that it does not believe Majola died of stab wounds to his thigh, but rather a gunshot wound to the face.

This emerged during the bail application of Phoenix suspects arrested for various crimes committed during the July unrest. The suspects re-appeared in court last week for the bail application. The state stated that the body of Majola needs to be exhumed and studied further. It is alleged that initial reports of the post-mortem did not reveal Majola was shot.

This comes after Dylan Govender’s attorney, Carl van der Merwe, claimed that Govender was wrongfully charged for murder as the post-mortem results allegedly showed that Majola had actually died from stab wounds. In a video shown to the court on 1 October, it’s alleged that a man wearing a yellow t-shirt was the perpetrator who actually stabbed Majola and is still at large.

Dylan and Ned Govender (two brothers) and their neighbour, Jeetendra Jaikissoon, are currently applying for bail and could face murder charges for the death of the Amaoti resident who was killed in Phoenix during the riots in July. The matter has been adjourned to 20 October.

Speaking to The Phoenix Tabloid, Learnmore Siwele said he agreed to the exhumation of his son’s body because he wanted justice. “My son was 19 years old. He was in matric. We want the truth. We want justice. That’s why we agreed to the exhumation of the body in the Eastern Cape. The elders in the Eastern Cape have commenced with the ritual.”
