As the country emerges from the pandemic and the various other challenges affecting communities and school sports, the Umongo Petroleum and the George Ramalu Memorial Trust (GRMT) have once again pledged their support and assistance in the development of sport and social upliftment in the Friendship Games.
These games normally takes place annually among a number of organisations including PHOESSA (Phoenix and Districts School Sports Association), TONVER (Tongaat and Verulam School Sports Association) and CADSSA (Chatsworth and Districts School Sports Association). Jace Nair, chairperson of the GRMT, said their partnership with the school sporting structures, to the tune of R100 000, was announced at the finals in Chatsworth in 2019 and was in keeping with the overall vision of the Trust.
Boston Moonsamy of Umongo Petroleum was very excited about the partnership with the school sporting organisations and reiterated their support for community driven initiatives. Both these leaders were quick to point out that the late sporting icon, George Ramalu was very passionate about sporting and social upliftment and that he would have given this partnership his ultimate blessings.
In addition, ventures of this nature are part of the greater vision of the George Ramalu Memorial Trust. As part of these principles their commitment to sustainable development, balancing short and long-term interests on integrating economic, environmental and social considerations are strongly aligned to their key stakeholder visions.
Trustee of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Trevor Moonsamy said: “It is part of the directive of SASCOC that all development and junior sport should be conducted via school structures in conjunction with the sporting federations. The tournament caters for the following codes of sport: soccer, netball, volleyball, table tennis and chess.”
Moonsamy was very proud to announce the introduction of “girls” football for the first time this year. “This is in keeping with Women’s Month and the various other initiatives to uplift and empower women in our country. All schools will be part of the tournament. Learners will have an opportunity to play at school and district level. Selected teams from each district will then participate in a Gala Day of finals on 27 August. While the venue for the finals is presently rotated among the three areas, the 2022 finals will be hosted at the Saccharine Grounds, Eastbury Phoenix and will commence at 9am.”
