It was a positive start for the #CleanBlueLagoon volunteers who collected tons of litter along the shorelines of Blue Lagoon recently.

Volunteers from Durban North and surrounds, stashed plastic bottles, shoes, and other foreign objects into black bin bags.
Denise Mc Creadie one of the volunteers of the clean-up said that she was impressed with the turn-out as there were lot more people than normal. “There were lot of new faces and it was nice to see and catch up with some of our old volunteers. As we could not clean during lockdown I think that our volunteers were eager to get involved which is why we had good numbers on the day,” she said.
Mc Creadie said that this clean-up was the first one after lockdown, and for the year, which made it nice to be able to attend and to catch up with everyone.
“There is a lovely social aspect to #CleanBlueLagoon so although we are all giving up our time to volunteer, you do make friends with people who also want to give back and improve our environment and ocean. It was nice to see the younger generation getting involved as there were quiet a few parents with their children and some of the students from Our Lady of Fatima Dominical Convent School attended,” said Mc Creadie.
She said that Adopt a River had been cleaning during lockdown and during the week, so they had collected a lot of litter in their usual spot.
“We were able to focus more on the sea side verses the riverside. Although Adopt a River do an amazing job and collect tons of plastic it amazes me that there is always still a mountain of litter still to be collected. And that is not even taking into account if you dig under the sand there are loads of plastic waiting to be removed. We unfortunately only do a surface clean before it rains and the next batch of rubbish comes down,” she said.
Mc Creadie Clean Blue Lagoon happens on the third Saturday of every month, which coincides with the Beach Wood Mangroves open day, so the next one will be on 20 March.
“Everyone is welcome and social distancing is easy because it is outside and we have loads of space. So please come and join us for our next clean-up,” said Mc Creadie. For more information contact Denise Mc Creadie on www.cacreativeads.co.za or email denise@cacreativeads.co.za
