Service and dedication were honoured as Phoenix Child Welfare (PCW) hosted a special volunteers’ appreciation function on Saturday, 13 June, recognising the individuals and partners who contributed to the success of the recent Phoenix Fair.

The event highlighted the collective effort behind the fair, which generated an unaudited net profit of R1.2 million, and provided an opportunity to acknowledge the commitment of volunteers whose time, effort and support made the fundraising initiative possible.
Fair Coordinator Sham Maharaj expressed gratitude to all involved, noting that the Phoenix Fair continues to demonstrate the impact of community unity.

“The Phoenix Fair continues to demonstrate what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose and compassion. Every contribution—whether through time, resources, or support—has helped us advance our mission of protecting and empowering children and families,” said Maharaj.

He added that the fair remains one of PCW’s most important fundraising initiatives, supporting child protection and family preservation programmes while also strengthening collaboration among community stakeholders and raising awareness of challenges faced by vulnerable families.

The PCW extended appreciation to sponsors, partners and stakeholders including Goldrush, the Sibaya Community Trust, Rising Sun, Megazone, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Metro Police, the Community Police Forum and Sealan Security, as well as all volunteers and staff who contributed to the event’s success.

The organisation noted that this year holds special significance as the Phoenix community marks 50 years since its establishment in the mid-1970s, reflecting decades of growth, identity and resilience.

PCW reaffirmed its ongoing role in addressing social challenges affecting children and families through statutory child protection services, family preservation and reunification programmes, early prevention initiatives and community-based support services.

Looking ahead, the organisation announced a series of upcoming initiatives, including a fundraising brochure, a telethon in partnership with Megazone scheduled for the end of August, and plans to raise funds for a minibus to assist transport for children at the Phoenix Children’s Home.

Additional outreach programmes, awareness campaigns and stakeholder engagement initiatives are also planned as PCW continues to strengthen its services and expand its impact within the community.
