Vehicle crime in the province has escalated and law enforcement and crime fighters are striving daily to clamp down on perpetrators responsible for such criminal deeds with frequent incidents reported in the Durban South precinct.
On Monday morning a vehicle owner acted quickly and contacted Tracker Connect when the vehicle was discovered stolen from the Montclair area.
PT Alarms Tactical Unit, a Tracker Connect partner, responded to the activation together with other responders.
Spokesperson for PT Alarms, Dhevan Govindasamy said: “A blue Volkswagen Polo sedan was stolen from the Montclair area after which the owner contacted Tracker Connect and immediately the unit was activated. PT Tactical unit members received the activation and swiftly proceeded to B section Umlazi where the vehicle was recovered. The ignition was tampered with and driver’s door locking mechanism was damaged.
Tracker Connect and Metro Police Umlazi assisted in the recovery. Vehicle crimes are increasing and suspects can be ruthless when confronted. Suspects are sometimes armed and are not averse to opening fire on responders.”
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, crimefighters and law enforcement officers worked fast and furiously to track and recover a black Mercedes Benz GLE 450 4 matic which was hijacked in the Chatsworth area by unknown gunmen. The vehicle was swiftly recovered in Umlazi BB section.
“The suspects were believed to be travelling eastbound on Higginson Highway. Tracker was contacted immediately and the tracking device was activated. PT Tactical unit officers, Tracker Connect members together with various other units were mobilized in search of the hijacked Mercedes.
A search was conducted and the vehicle was recovered by Tracker Connect and PT Tactical unit members in Umlazi BB section where it was found idling in a garage. The suspects made a getaway when they spotted members approaching,” said Govindasamy.
According to Govindasamy, the vehicle was taken to Bhekithemba SAPS by members.
“Various other items, believed to be used in the commission of crimes, were also discovered in the vehicle. Thanks to Umlazi Metro Police, Bhekithemba SAPS, Umlazi SAPS, Brighton Beach SAPS, ET and SAPS Airwing for their assistance in the recovery of the vehicle. All responders are commended on their sterling work on the field. Suspects are wily and creative in their crime tactics and sometimes opt to kidnap the driver in a bid to discover more information about the vehicle and its tracking device. Vehicle owners are urged to refrain from antagonizing suspects especially if they are harmed as it can have serious, if not, fatal consequences,” Govindasamy added.
