Sensei Vijay Govender, a formidable karateka from Durban North, emerged as a world champion at the 13th edition of the WUKF World Karate Championships, held in Malmö, Sweden, from 9 to 13 July. Govender was a vital part of the 39-member WUKF Team SA.
Representing the International Shotokan Karate Federation South Africa, Govender narrowly missed a medal in the 51 to 60 years kata category, ultimately finishing fourth overall. Despite this, she was very pleased with her kata performance. In her debut international competition for the Kobudo category (long weapons kata), she impressively secured a silver medal. She then went on to dominate the Shobu Sanbon Kumite category, bringing home the gold medal and earning the coveted world champion title for that event. “I became very emotional when the South African anthem was played while receiving my gold medal on the podium. I am extremely humbled and proud to have been part of the first ever appearance as WUKF South Africa to represent at the world championships.”
Govender stated that her remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the guidance, protection, and provision of God above. “I would like to thank my family, friends and acquaintances who supported me throughout this journey and for expressing their joy in my achievement. I would also like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to all my sponsors who made it possible for me to participate at the WUKF World Karate Championships.”

Notably, she was the sole KwaZulu-Natal athlete to scoop a medal at the championships and the only gold medallist for kumite overall. Govender also successfully completed the international coaches exams with an outstanding 98% pass rate and is now an internationally certified senior coach by the WUKF World Coaching Commission and EurEthICS.
Among 33 countries, 66 federations, over 1,700 athletes, and more than 3,800 entries, WUKF SA achieved an impressive eighth-place finish overall with a total of 31 medals, comprising 9 gold, 11 silver, and 11 bronze medals.
