Disaster averted as blaze breaks out near Berea Station traders’ market

Swift action and vigilance helped avert a potential disaster after a fire broke out near the traders’ market in the vicinity of Berea Station on Monday.

Private security officers from Ensure Security Tactical units spotted the blaze shortly after midnight on 13 April 2026 during routine patrols.

Ensure Security spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the fire is suspected to have originated from vagrants and quickly posed a threat to nearby infrastructure.

“The fire is suspected to have originated from vagrants and quickly posed a direct threat to nearby infrastructure. During routine patrols, our officers detected the fire and immediately escalated the matter,” he said.

eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services responded promptly to the scene, supported by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Metro Police.

“Emergency services arrived on scene and worked to contain the blaze. The fire was successfully extinguished and no injuries were reported,” van Reenen added.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the fire, but investigations are expected to continue.
