Phoenix police have issued a warning to religious leaders and congregations following an increase in thefts and burglaries targeting places of worship within the community.

According to Phoenix SAPS spokesperson Nadia Ebrahim, religious institutions including churches, mosques, temples and other places of worship are increasingly becoming targets for criminals, particularly during weekdays, late evenings and in between services. Ebrahim explained that criminals often steal high-value items that can easily be removed and sold. These include sound systems, musical instruments, electrical cables, computers, televisions, generators, cash donations, copper piping and other valuable property.

She urged religious leaders and management committees to prioritise security measures aimed at reducing opportunities for criminal activity and strengthening protection at their premises. Ebrahim advised institutions to ensure that all doors, windows, gates and access points are fitted with quality locks and adequate security features. She also recommended the installation and maintenance of alarm systems, CCTV cameras, motion-sensor lighting and other security devices.

To further improve safety, Ebrahim encouraged institutions to enhance visibility around their premises by trimming overgrown vegetation and ensuring adequate lighting throughout the property. She stressed the importance of marking and recording valuable items, including serial numbers, to assist with identification and recovery should theft occur. She said: “Religious institutions are cautioned against keeping large amounts of cash on site and are encouraged to deposit donations promptly. Regular inspections should be conducted to ensure security systems remain functional and effective. We also encourage the establishment of neighbourhood and faith-based safety partnerships with surrounding communities and local Community Police Forums (CPFs),” said Ebrahim.

She added: “Caretakers, security personnel and congregants are also urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or vehicles immediately. Storage areas, offices and rooms containing valuable equipment should remain securely locked at all times. The prevention of crime is a shared responsibility. By remaining vigilant and implementing proactive security measures, religious institutions can significantly reduce their vulnerability to criminal activities,” added Ebrahim.
