The Newlands East Rapid Response Team (RRT) will remove all assets and communication from the Lakehaven Estate Safe House following the theft of donated items intended for abused victims and their children.
Dr Nadia Bernon, chairperson of RRT said that the safe house was was acquired under false pretences, assuming that the people and used to mislead sponsors into making donation but since its launch on 25 November 2024, it has primarily been used as a storage site for a security company rather than a refuge for victims.
Dr Bernon, condemned the theft, saying , “Anyone who steals from abused victims and their children will never be part of the RRT or a key stakeholder. We have worked tirelessly over the past five years, only for First Metro Housing to ruin our name,”she said.
Concerns arose when it was discovered that a Lakehaven Estate resident, unaffiliated with the RRT Executive Committee, had possession of the Safe House keys while Metro Housing staff were also unable to access the site. When Dr Bernon attempted to visit the premises, she was denied entry. Upon gaining access, a box of blankets, towels, clothing, and toiletries was confirmed missing, with sponsors verifying that these items had been donated.
The RRT continues its operations at its Garraupa site, providing second-hand clothing, meals, basic counselling, and referrals for GBV cases. Victims will now be referred to two alternative Safe Houses, maintained in partnership with the business sector.
While advised to open a theft case, Dr Bernon has chosen not to press charges but will sever ties with Metro Housing staff on the property and those involved in the unauthorised access. “It’s devastating because sponsorships are hard to secure, and now those entrusted with the site have stolen from it,” she said.
The RRT urges stakeholders and the community to remain vigilant and support their continued efforts to assist victims of abuse.
