Sizwe Clinton Ngema, a Durban Metro Police officer (28), was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of murdering his pregnant girlfriend, Constable Yolanda Khuzwayo (23), also a Metro Police officer, on 30 March 2024.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) welcomed the sentence of 20 years imposed on Ngema in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court. Ngema was also sentenced to 12 months for theft and another 12 months for reckless and negligent driving, with all sentences to run concurrently. Additionally, Ngema was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
According to IPID reports, Khuzwayo had fallen pregnant and was uncertain about keeping the baby. “She confided in friends that she was considering terminating the pregnancy. Ngema gained access to her phone and discovered her plan, which angered him. Ngema and Khuzwayo were living together in a flat on Victoria Embankment.
“On 30 March 2024, Ngema confronted Khuzwayo about her intentions to terminate the pregnancy, and an argument ensued between the two. He then took a knife and stabbed Khuzwayo multiple times before fleeing the scene. He took Khuzwayo’s phone with him, and while driving recklessly along the M4, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a road barrier,” said IPID.
IPID took over the investigation, and Ngema was arrested. He remained in custody after being denied bail.
