A family trip to the beach ended in tragedy after a freak wave swept a mother and daughter into the ocean where they drowned.

The bodies of the deceased were recovered by a SAPS Search and Rescue team and Scottburgh police are currently investigating an inquest.

after the  47-year-old mother and her five-year-old daughter drowned during a family trip to Preston Beach, on Saturday, 27 August 2022.

Communications officer at Scottburgh SAPS, Captain Adam Francis, said: “On Saturday, 27 August at 5pm, a 47-year-old mother, her 12-year-old son and her 5-year-old daughter were at Preston Beach in Park Rynie. It is believed that the mother decided that they rinse their feet after walking on the beach. The son went into the tidal pool and the mother and child were walking on the tidal pool wall. A freak wave swept them off the wall and into the sea. The son and a bystander jumped into the sea and managed to pull the mother out. She was declared dead by paramedics.”

Cpt Francis said the 5-year-old girl’s body washed up at Park Rynie camp site on Sunday, 28 August.
