The perseverance and dedication of Constable Amos Sphakaniswa Bhengu from Bellair SAPS has been applauded following the successful conviction of robbery-accused, Sipho Dubazane.

Dubazane, 47, robbed a woman in front of her young child, last November, in Seaview. Sergeant M Pillay from Bellair SAPS said Bhengu’s diligence in investigating the robbery led to Dubazane being sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on the charges of armed robbery at the Durban Magistrate’s Court. “Station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Radash Ramchunder, commended the member for the sterling investigation conducted. His commitment in securing the sentencing of the accused is also recognised as a fight in reducing crimes against vulnerable groups.”

According to Pillay, the victim was walking along a quiet road accompanied by her young child when she was accosted by the accused who pointed a knife at her and demanded her cellphone. “The woman who was very afraid for her life especially that of her young child, gave in to the demands of the accused. He then fled bearing the victim’s personal belongings.” Pillay said the community was alerted of this crime and the accused was soon apprehended, while still in possession of the stolen item and the knife that was used to commit the crime.
