The ReStory Foundation recently launched its innovative Phakama Skills Development Programme in Bhambayi, iNanda, on Monday, 11 August. Aimed at empowering unemployed young adults, the programme welcomed 39 enthusiastic participants to a curriculum focused on practical, life, and work skills.
The training is structured around three core areas, which are described as skills of the heart, head, and hands. Participants are guided through essential life skills such as vision setting, setting SMART goals, ethics, conflict resolution, healing from the past, and fostering healthy relationships. Another critical component of the training is workplace skills, including how to craft effective CVs, manage professional email and social media, secure and retain employment, responsibly use artificial intelligence tools, understand finance basics, and explore various career pathways. Practical skills, either accredited or designed to lead to immediate income opportunities, are also provided to prepare participants for the workforce.

Zama Zikhali, a programme representative, highlighted the importance of collaborative partnerships with numerous companies, organisations, and facilitators in and around Durban. She said: “These partnerships are key to upskilling and equipping our participants with relevant tools for success.”
The programme also fosters a strong sense of community, encouraging participants to contribute to making Bhambayi a safer and cleaner place. The Phakama programme is led by youth development worker Ernest Mngomeni, who brings a unique perspective as a former participant from four years ago. “Having been in their shoes, I’m passionate about opening doors of opportunity for others,” he said.
While the programme does not guarantee employment after completion, the energy and optimism among the group are palpable. The foundation believes that building meaningful connections and strength are vital components in any young person’s journey toward a brighter future.
