Register your vehicle where you live

Branches of the SA Post Office in KwaZulu-Natal said they were experiencing challenges in the printing of licence disks as owners failed to change their address and register the vehicle with the local authority where they currently live.

Johan Kruger from the SA Post Office said, “Motor vehicle owners who move to a different municipality must register their vehicles with the municipality at their new address.  If they fail to do this, their local post office will not be able to renew and print the disk. “An example would be a customer who owns two vehicles living in Richards Bay with one vehicle registered in Richards Bay and the other registered in Nongoma.  The customer would only be able to renew the licence disk for the vehicle registered in Richards Bay at their local office; they would have to go to another post office in Nongoma to renew the other vehicle’s licence disk.”

“This requirement applies in KwaZulu-Natal as the licensing system retains the link between the vehicle, the registering municipality and your address – each municipality has its own unique number prefix, such as ND showing that a vehicle is registered in Durban.

“The Post Office accepts both cash and cards as payment for paying vehicle licences, and most Post Office branches have a separate queue for customers who are there to collect their R350 SASSA SRD grant.  The system of separate queues ensures that all customers wait for the minimum time,” added Kruger.
