As paintbrushes sweep across canvases and creativity takes centre stage around the world, World Art Day on Wednesday, 15 April offers a moment to reflect on the transformative power of artistic expression. For Durban North artist and art teacher Lilian Liebenberg, the day is more than a celebration—it is a reminder of how art connects people, nurtures emotional well-being, and brings communities together in meaningful ways.
World Art Day aims to promote the development, appreciation, and accessibility of art across all communities globally. The initiative was established in 2012 by the International Association of Art in collaboration with UNESCO. The date was intentionally chosen to coincide with the birthday of renowned artist Leonardo da Vinci, whose legacy symbolises creativity, peace, freedom of expression, and the interconnectedness of art and other disciplines.
Liebenberg, owner of Articity Art and Painting Studio, described the occasion as a celebration of creativity and artistic community, emphasising art’s ability to reveal deeper emotional and psychological layers. She said: “Art allows us to express our subconscious and see beyond what is directly in front of us.”
For her, art is deeply personal. “My creativity and artworks are more than just putting colours on a canvas—it’s my therapy, my outlet, and has always been my way of expressing thoughts and emotions,” she explained. Liebenberg added that her work is largely inspired by nature, with a focus on waterscapes, boats, and landscapes. “The beauty of the ocean and natural surroundings inspires me the most.”

She believes that art plays a significant role in fostering healing, resilience, and joy within communities, particularly among young people. According to Liebenberg, the true meaning of an artwork lies not only in its final form but also in the creative process behind it. “Understanding the artist’s thoughts, process, and subject matter reveals far more than the artwork alone,” she said.
To mark the occasion, Liebenberg will collaborate with her students on a special artwork dedicated to World Art Day, celebrating both creativity and the shared experience of artistic expression.
