With the recent surge of Covid positive cases following the discovery of the new variant called Omicron, there has been a call for a total shutdown of the country. Being December and a need to grow the economy, the shutdown may not be applicable. With this in mind, The Phoenix Tabloid took to the streets to ask readers about precautions and steps they will be taking this December to ensure a safe festive season for themselves and those around them.
Shanice Pillay:
Covid-19 has been around for almost two years now and it’s not something new. Yes, there are new variants discovered, but I think the community needs to remember that many people have died due to this virus and we can’t take this lightly. December is a festive season but we need to also be aware that the bummers are on the rise and take that into consideration before trying to celebrate. We need to continue taking precautions, sanitise for everything and social distance.
Keilah Annette Pillay:
The only way to curb this virus is to continue taking the precautions. Even though people want to celebrate the year and we are happy that we have made it thus far, we still need to remember that this virus isn’t going to just disappear and the fact that new variants are been discovered should only alert us more. We need to continue taking precautions to ensure the safety of our families during this time.
Preston Marsh Naidoo:
I feel like it is crazy to know that with the discovery of the new variant and the fact that the Covid cases are on the rise, there are still people walking around and taking public transport without using masks and taking their precautions. I think we need to start thinking for the next person, because maybe if you get it you won’t be sick, but it could be deadly to the next. I think the only thing we can do is continue to sanitise, use our masks and social distance. It is something small but if everyone does it then it can make a huge difference.
Kogie Govender:
December means that everyone wants to be on the move and wants to enjoy their festive season but with that in mind we all need to realise that we are still in the midst of a global pandemic that is only getting worse. Yes, we have vaccines and boosters but scientists are discovering new variants which only means that this virus is growing. We need to pay attention and make sure we keep ourselves and others safe by doing the bare minimum and using our masks.
Gavin Gounden:
Even though we are at the end of the year and people want to let loose and celebrate making it through this year, we need to also take into consideration the fact that due to the virus many lives were taken and we must not take that for granted. We still need to be cautious during this time and use our masks not only for the sake of our safety but also to ensure the safety of those around us. There isn’t much to do but the small things like using masks, social distancing and trying to stay home can have a huge impact.
