A section of Transnet Property running along Reid Road is fast becoming a hide-out and quick escape route for thieves and is even a ‘watering hole’ for some locals. Residents of Reid Road told The Ladysmith Herald that the dark and densely overgrown area is a serious call for concern as house break-ins, property theft and even looting of trains has increased in the area.

“We have called the municipality and even made contact with officials from Transnet to see if there is something that can be done to clean up the area, but nothing,” said a resident.

The Ladysmith Herald reporter was then led down the pedestrian path and into the bush where there were scattered empty alcohol bottles, human faeces, pieces of clothing, used condoms and even empty boxes that were left behind after a train was looted.

“This is not the first time that the stationed train was looted. Another concern raised by the community was the easy access to the railway track. There used to be a fence here. Anyone can walk along the railway and straight up into our residential area.”

Residents said that goods on trains, which are supposed to be protected, are being stolen and that at no time were any security officials seen. “We watched the following day, how people came up from the N11 and along the track to continue to move the looted goods.”

Easy access to residential properties has forced locals to increase security measures such as extra lighting to deter criminals from their homes. “At night, it is incredibly dark. There was a huge spotlight but it has not worked for a few years now.”

SAPS Ladysmith has confirmed that on Thursday evening, 12 January, clothing, school bags and IT equipment were stolen from a train in this area. “The discovery of the theft was made and a substantial amount of items were taken. Ladysmith detectives are investigating a case of theft,” said Warrant Officer Bash Khan of SAPS Ladysmith.

Alfred Duma Municipality and Transnet were contacted for comments regarding the situation, however, none were forthcoming at the time of print.
