Officials and motorists described the scene of the crash that had tragically claimed the life of one person, as something from a horror movie. “It was horrific to witnesses,” said a motorist, who had stopped moments after the crash occurred along the N11, 12 kilometers outside Ladysmith, on Thursday evening, 2 September.
RTI, KZNEMS, ER24 Ladysmith and SAPS police responded to the scene, after a vehicle had allegedly lost control, veered off the road and crashed down the steep embankment. “We stopped to see if there was something that we could do or if there were people injured, but we only found the driver, who had been pulled apart, it was not a good thing to witness,” added the motorist.
It was alleged that the vehicle had been travelling from Ladysmith towards Newcastle, when the fatal crash occurred. Witnesses claim that the vehicle had crashed through the steel barriers and a fence, before coming to an abrupt stop on the side.
Emergency officials were called, but the driver of the vehicle was declared dead. A case of culpable homicide will be investigated by the Ladysmith Police. The deceased had not been officially identified.
