A community activist with a passion for God and people, Vusumuzi Sifiso Kunene has set his heart on changing the Amajuba District and surrounding areas for the better. He recently sat down with the Newcastle Express to tell us more about his passion for people and change.
Newcastle Express (NE): In a nutshell, who is Vusumuzi?
Vusumuzi Sifiso Kunene (VSK): I am a 24-year-old purpose-driven man with a heart for community service. I am a motivational speaker, a life coach, a community builder, spiritual leader, radio personality and a personal coach, just to name a few. I am the founder of Ndumiso Global Christian Newspaper and the founder of VK Admin services. Above all, I love to serve the community.
NE: Where did you grow up?
VSK: I grew up in Nqutu where I attended primary school. I matriculated in 2016 and then moved to Newcastle.
NE: You have a non-profit organisation and focus a lot on the community. Tell us more about this.
VSK: I have registered an NPO called Newcastle Religious Council. The main aim is to care for the elderly by visiting, praying and supporting them in their needs. It is also to work with the community and government departments in fighting social ills such as poverty, unemployment and lack of education. Our other aim is to build relationships with other churches as well as to evangelise and pray for those who need it.
NE: Why is community empowerment so important to you?
VSK: As a Christian leader, I believe that God has sent us to bring solutions and to bring light where there is darkness.
NE: What would you say are some of the issues that most affect communities?
VSK: The issue that mostly affects us is identity. We allow people to judge us and believe the negative. If we as people can brand ourselves and acknowledge skills and passion, I think we can make a difference and be united.
NE: How can ordinary citizens make a difference?
VSK: We need to be united in our society and uplift rather than to bring down.
NE: What are some of the initiatives that you have been involved in?
VSK: I have been working hand in hand with many NPOs as well as those who are still developing. We assist them in being productive and to run effectively. I also do awareness campaigns on drug abuse and teenage pregnancy as well as any other social ills which affect us. I have also opened youth clubs in Madadeni and Osizweni and work a lot with schools in order to bring change and academic empowerment. I also assist with food relief.
NE: What do you do in your spare time?
VSK: I visit homes to preach the Gospel and to identify needs and organise relief. I also read spiritual books.
NE: What is a destination that you would most like to visit?
VSK: Definitely South Korea.
NE: Do you have any advice for the youth?
VSK: Know yourself. Find your identity and do what the Lord says that you must do. Do not be defined by your past. Find your purpose and use what you have to build what you do not have. God has blessed you, find out what your blessing is and you will find your calling. Walk with people who are wise. Tell yourself that you are unstoppable and you will achieve great things.
