Chatsworth’s generations of nurses recently took a big break, dished out awards and accolades, broke bread and enjoyed dinner and drinks and let their hair down in an extraordinary celebration of the history, legend and legacy of our own Florence Nightingales.

A seasoned and senior nurse, Sister Paddy Chettiar, took up the story of the Nurses Nite get-together held at the at the Arena Park Hall.

Dana Govender, retired manager at the Heart and Stroke Foundation (SA), received an award in the presence of her husband, Steven Govender, from Paddy Chettiar

She said: “The hall came alive with a grand celebration of dedication and service when we hosted Nurses Nite 2024 in a special evening that was dedicated to honouring the tireless efforts and remarkable contributions of nurses. Over 60 nurses received awards and medals for their services to patients and humanity.”

Chettiar said that amidst the awards, the organisers – including Siva Naidoo, Leena Bachu and the NPO Wand support group – singled out former Merebank resident, Dana Govender, a long-standing manager at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa at Entabeni Hospital, where she hosted many medical care and therapy sessions as well as workshops for sufferers of hypertension and other heart-related diseases over the years.

Govender retired recently amidst glowing praise from Dr Priscilla Naidoo, CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Cape Town.

“Dana Govender is a shining star among the many illustrious attendees. She recently retired from the Heart and Stroke Foundation and was honoured for her significant contributions to the community through her wellness programmes. Her tireless work and commitment to improving community health have left an indelible mark, making her a true inspiration to her peers and the community at large.

“Her presence at this event is humbling, reminding everyone of the profound impact one individual can have through dedication and compassion,” Chettiar told the awards recipients and guests before making a presentation to Govender in the presence of her husband, Steven.

“The recognition of individuals like Dana Govender highlighted the profound impact nurses can make on patients and the healthcare sector,” she added.

Govender paid tribute to nurses and highlighted how indispensable nurses were alongside doctors and other healthcare professionals in the private and public medical industry and hospitals.

Chettiar described the event as memorable and said it would become an annual feature.

She said: “Throughout the night, the sense of honour and appreciation was palpable. Nurses, often the unsung heroes of the healthcare system, were celebrated for their relentless dedication and hard work. The awards ceremony was particularly moving, with each recipient called to the stage to receive their medal amidst applause and cheers. This moment of recognition highlighted the significant impact these healthcare professionals have on their patients and communities.

“It was more than just a celebration; it was a powerful testament to the critical role nurses play in our society. It underscored the importance of acknowledging and appreciating those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. As the evening drew to a close, the smiles and laughter of the guests reflected their joy and pride from being honoured and celebrated.”
