In today’s dynamic business environment, navigating regulations and adhering to best practices is no longer optional as compliance stands as a cornerstone for sustainable success, fostering trust, unlocking opportunities and mitigating risks.

The Newcastle Municipality, in partnership with various stakeholders, recently undertook a thorough business inspection to ensure that all businesses within the jurisdiction of the Newcastle industrial area adhere to the standards set forth in the Business Act (Act No. 71 of 1991).

The inspection team was led by Newcastle Municipality Mayor, Xolani Dube, and the Communications Unit said that the initiative formed part of the municipality’s ongoing commitment to uphold regulatory compliance and foster a fair and thriving business environment.

“A total of nine businesses, which included three informal businesses and six formal businesses, were visited. Regrettably, all nine businesses were found to be non-compliant with the relevant business regulations. These findings highlight the necessity for ongoing vigilance and support to ensure that all enterprises within Newcastle operate within the legal framework,” said the Communications Unit.

The following key areas of non-compliance identified during the inspection included:
– Lack of necessary business permits and licenses;
– non-adherence to health and safety standards;
– failure to meet zoning and land use regulations; and
– inadequate record-keeping and documentation.

“The municipality is dedicated to working closely with not only the identified nine businesses but with all businesses found to be non-compliant, to rectify the issues identified. We believe that compliance is not only a legal obligation but also a crucial aspect of maintaining a sustainable and reputable business environment. As such, we will be providing guidance and resources to assist these businesses in achieving compliance,” said Mayor Dube.

The assistance provided by the municipality will include support services such as advisory services to assist businesses in understanding and meeting their regulatory obligations as well as follow-up inspections, with the Local Economic Development Department within the municipality continuously conducting follow-up inspections to ensure that corrective measures have been implemented and maintained.

“Ensuring that businesses operate within the legal framework is essential for the prosperity and safety of our community. The findings of these inspections underscore the importance of vigilance and support. We are committed to working closely with our business community to help them achieve compliance,” said Mayor Dube.

The municipality urged all businesses within Newcastle to proactively review their operations and ensure that they are in compliance with all relevant regulations. By doing so, they contribute to the economic vitality and safety of the community.
