Newcastle is heading for a tourism-led economic recovery following the unveiling of initiatives that local leaders are planning to attract new visitors and increase tourism spending.

The northern Natal town is to be repositioned as a premier tourism destination, with the focus on events, natural assets and cultural heritage. Amajuba District Mayor, Dr Musa Ngubane, said the town has seen an increase in township hospitality businesses which provides jobs and a variety of experiences for visitors. “However, during the earlier stages of the lockdown, the town’s tourism sector lost more than R 115 million,” said Ngubane.
The regional airport has also been upgraded and will be developed into a techno hub, presenting an opportunity for attracting investment, while also creating jobs. There is also talk of a multi-million rand hotel and other accommodation outlets on the cards, although negotiations have not yet been finalised.

The revised Amajuba Tourism Strategy aims to reset the town’s tourism identity and brand.
“We as Newcastle can clearly see that the industry is showing signs of recovery with the growth shown in accommodation figures. Furthermore the business industry is also showing signs of recovery and reinvestment taking place,” commented Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba.

“We are still urging and encouraging people to visit Newcastle. We will be launching an aggressive tourism campaign under the theme ‘Newcastle Has More’. The recent activation by KwaZulu-Natal Tourism in Newcastle was a clear indication that we have a lot to offer,” said Mahlaba. Long-time resident, Henk Botha, who has been living in Newcastle for 53 years, said it was good to see growth.

“I remember a time when there was absolutely nothing recreational to do on a weekend. Over the years that has changed so much. I am glad that the tourism campaign has given us even more hope of Newcastle becoming even more entertaining. At least now when my children visit from out of town there are places to take my grandkids, like the Vulintaba Estate,” said Botha.
