Newcastle Municipality Mayor, Xolani Dube, recently donated over ten sets of heavy duty turn-out gear to the Emadlangeni Municipality. The donation is aimed at assisting firefighters in achieving the core functions of their duties which are to effectively conduct fire rescue missions, extinguish hazardous veld fires and prevent life-threatening situations.

The heavy duty gear will also ensure that the lives of firefighters are safe during dangerous missions. The gear consisted of fire helmets, turn-out pants and jackets as well as gloves and boots that are made of durable, heat-resistant material to protect firefighters from both heat and falling objects. The Emadlangeni Municipality Mayor, Mzwakhe Buthelezi, offered their thanks and appreciation to Mayor Dube for the donation.

“We appreciate the thoughtful gesture from our sister municipality as the Emadlangeni Municipality has been unable to procure sufficient protective clothing due to financial challenges. This donation will provide much value and assistance to the Disaster Unit. This gesture which is done in the spirit of cooperative governance comes at the start of the fire season which becomes a challenge due to the vastness of the municipal area which is also prone to fires. This will assist greatly in mitigating the risks,” said Mayor Buthelezi.
