Following a week of overflowing sewerage that contributed to dangerous driving conditions at the intersection of Blackburn Road and the notoriously busy North Coast Road/Chris Hani Road (R102), motorists breathed a sigh of relief after the eThekwini Municipality recently addressed the issue.
Ward 36 councillor Heinz de Boer said he first logged the problem on Monday, 31 August, and that it was unblocked within a day. However, on 3 September, the matter was escalated to the city’s Roads and Stormwater Department.
De Boer praised the department for its response in tackling the overflow.
“Considering that the local department’s equipment was broken and that they had to get equipment from another depot, I think the response time, although a bit longer than expected, showcased how dedicated some of our officials are.
“The Roads and Stormwater Team have generally always tried to help as quickly as possible. It’s a great example of how littering, sand and other debris can clog drains and really cause a massive traffic and safety problem.”
A plumber from the Roads and Stormwater team said workers had been on site since 11am. Their first priority was to remove the excessive amount of water that had flooded the road.
He said the team expected to complete the removal of the accumulated dirt by the end of the day.
