Mayor, Vincent Madlala,

Alfred Duma Municipal Mayor, Vincent Madlala, who was arrested at his home in Ezakheni Section E on 29 July for defeating the ends of justice, will remain in office.

This after a meeting held at council on Thursday, 26 August, when members of the Democratic Alliance and Inkatha Freedom Party called for the Mayor to step down with immediate effect. Forty-three votes against the motion of no confidence were cast, while the DA, IFP and the NPA voted for the motion to pass on. “The votes cast for the motion were not enough and the Mayor will remain in power,” said IFP Councillor, Abbas Warasally. Cllr Warasally added that they will seek further legal advice as this has a negative effect on the council; and wanted to argue for a secret vote, however, he said his request was ignored and council moved forward with the vote. The call for a motion of no confidence was made after Mayor Madlala and his daughter were both arrested and charged for defeating the ends of justice and the Mayor was granted a R10 000 bail, with his next court date being 22 October.
