Defending League Champions, Breakwaters AC, were outclassed by the rampant Dannhauser and Challengers angling clubs following their poor showing in League 1. Dannhauser AC bounced back to take top position during League 2 at Richgate Park, finishing with 38 points and narrowly edging out Challengers AC who scored 36 points.
With one point each separating the next three clubs, Breakwaters AC (13 pts); Stillwaters AC (12 pts) and Glencoe AC (11 pts), the result now makes the rest of the season exciting and competitive with the rivalry so intense and with angling being unpredictable, the outcome of each competition cannot be taken for granted.
On the day, angling was rather poor with some anglers departing early after desperately trying to lure the elusive fish without much success. The current log positions are: Breakwaters AC (16pts); Challengers AC (16 pts); Dannhauser AC (14 pts); Stillwaters AC (10 pts) and Glencoe AC (4 pts).
The “Angler of the Day” was Kaveer Singh of Challengers AC, finishing with 17 points and receiving the red cap, an outright trophy and R200 for his good haul of fish. The top three anglers of the APL were Kaveer Singh (CAC – 22 pts); Inaayat Ahmed (NDH – 11 pts) and joint third (Aniel Boodhoo – SAC) and Darren Botha (CAC) on 9 pts each. Top anglers per club were Sikander Amod (BAC – 6 pts) and Husain Syed (NGL – 7 pts).
The early title contenders setting the pace were Henning De Meyer (NDH – heaviest carp of 3.550kg); Omar Sheriff (heaviest non-scaled category – 1.9kg); Veruschka Boodhoo (SAC – Lady Angler of the Year with 5 pts); Yahyaa Abdool (NDH – Junior Angler of the Year with 2 pts); Kamal Durgadin (NDH – Senior Angler of the Year with 3 pts) and Kaveer Singh of Challengers AC topping the log with 22 points.
The Angling Professional League (APL) and “Angler of the Day” are sponsored by Mohamed Midas while the Knock Out Competition and Grand Challenge will be sponsored by Ahmed Yusuf Amedjee of AA Coaches. With these sponsorships, the APL received a massive cash injection with the top three Anglers of the Year receiving R3 000, R2 000 and R1 000 worth of tackle vouchers sponsored by Mohamed Midas with the Angler of the Year winning the ultimate prize – a family weekend worth R4 000.
The top anglers of each club who do not finish in the overall top three spots will receive tackle vouchers to the value of R250 for their achievements within their clubs. This season, the Lady Angler of Year will receive a R1 000 tackle voucher. “Thank you to our major sponsors,” said APL officials.
The next fixture of the APL is League 3 at Sandford on 6 November and with such intense competition after two rounds, it certainly has the makings of an action-packed season as the clubs battle for glory.
