Tragedy struck on the Durban promenade, when a body was discovered in the water at the pier, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The Durban Metro Police Service Search and Rescue Unit responded to the vicinity near Wedge Pier at Lower Marine Parade.
Spokesperson for Metro Police, Colonel Boysie Zungu, said: “Following a comprehensive safety assessment, members conducted a recovery operation and successfully recovered the body from the ocean.

The deceased was respectfully brought ashore and handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.”
He added: “The Durban Metropolitan Police Service commends the professionalism, courage, and dedication of the Search and Rescue members who carried out the operation safely under challenging conditions.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.”
