Team South Africa enjoyed a successful Commonwealth Games campaign, returning home with 28 medals after the competition in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August.
On the final day of competition, South Africa’s Kyle Rademeyer secured the silver medal in the men’s pole vault with a clearance of 5.70m. The achievement brought the country’s silver medal tally to 11, adding to its seven gold and 10 bronze medals.
Although South Africa finished as the highest-ranked African nation in terms of overall medals, with 28, it placed behind Nigeria on the final standings after Nigeria claimed 10 gold medals.
South Africa enjoyed particular success in the swimming pool, where 23 of its 28 medals were won, underlining the country’s continued strength in the sport.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie congratulated the team, saying: “This team went to Glasgow and made us proud. They have given it their all, and every single one of them comes home having helped to add another proud chapter to South Africa’s sporting history.”
The 28-medal haul marked a slight improvement on South Africa’s performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the team won 27 medals comprising seven gold, nine silver and 11 bronze.
