As Durban jazz lovers prepare to head down to the South Coast for the 2026 Ugu Jazz Festival and Offramp Experience, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mntomuhle Khawula says the event is about far more than music and entertainment.

Speaking at a state-of-readiness briefing held at the Blue Marlin Hotel in Scottburgh on Monday, Khawula described the festival as a platform that creates opportunities for local artists, stimulates economic growth and supports small businesses throughout the Ugu District.

The three-day festival, which takes place from 25 to 27 June at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Port Shepstone, is expected to attract visitors from across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond, bringing a welcome boost to the local economy.

“I am particularly excited that, in this year’s instalment of the Offramp Experience and Ugu Jazz Festival, we will see some of our newly discovered talents share the stage with established acts,” said Khawula.

He said the benefits of the festival extend well beyond the stage, creating opportunities for SMMEs, local vendors, accommodation establishments, transport operators and businesses operating within the hospitality sector.

“The festival creates meaningful opportunities for SMMEs, local vendors, accommodation establishments, transport operators, and the broader events and hospitality industry,” he said.

The briefing was attended by Ugu District Municipality Mayor Sikhumuzo Mqadi and organisers from Coolsounds Trading, who confirmed that preparations for the event were in full swing.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mntomuhle Khawula says the event is about far more than music and entertainment.

The festivities will begin on 25 June with the Offramp Experience Gala Dinner and Comedy Experience, bringing together business leaders, community stakeholders and festival patrons for an evening of entertainment and networking.

The programme features live performances by musicians Mondli Ngcobo and Zawadi Yamungu, while comedians Simphiwe Shembe, Simunye Churchboy, Mondli Mzizi and Nonto R are expected to provide plenty of laughter.

The following evening, the focus shifts to faith and inspiration with the Worship Experience, headlined by celebrated gospel artist Mpumi Mtsweni. The event will also feature prominent pastors and faith leaders from across the province.

The festival will reach its climax on 27 June when some of South Africa’s top performers take to the stage for the flagship Ugu Jazz Festival.

Audiences will be treated to performances by jazz veteran Don Laka, alongside Siphokazi, Ernie Smith, Fanie Dick, Naledi Aphiwe, Mnqobi Yazo, Mawelele, Danya, Bongani Nkwanyana and DJ Muntu Jikeleza.

Emerging artists from the region will also be given an opportunity to showcase their talents, with Olefied Khetha, DJ 101, Tender Mavundla and DJ Mshediz among those featured on the programme.

Coolsounds Trading representative Siyabonga Msomi said organisers were confident they were ready to host a successful event.

The festival’s signature transparent dome marquee is already being erected at the venue, where all activities will take place.

“We wouldn’t be where we are without our sponsors and partners, to whom we are extremely grateful. We want to assure our patrons that we are ready. Security measures will be robust and a comprehensive traffic management plan is in place to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles,” said Msomi.

He also revealed that organisers would launch a Corporate Social Investment initiative after the festival, with further details expected to be announced during the Gala Dinner and Comedy Experience.

Mayor Mqadi called on residents to support the festival and work together to showcase the district.

“We are ready. Let us unite and make our area flourish,” he said.

With the final preparations now under way, organisers are expecting a weekend that not only celebrates music and culture but also highlights the role major events can play in creating opportunities and driving economic development in local communities.
