A renewed sense of hope and dignity now fills the Three Homes in Ward 31 following the official opening of the Three Homes Wellness Centre for the Elderly held at St Gabriels – Men’s Home in Sydenham, last Wednesday.

The launch marked the culmination of months of work to restore governance, stabilise the institution and improve living conditions for elderly residents who had faced years of uncertainty.

Ward 31 Councillor Remona McKenzie said the homes had previously been found in a poor structural condition, with residents facing serious risks due to a lack of governance and oversight.

“As Ward Councillor, and following advice from the Department of Social Development, I convened a Special Annual General Meeting to restore structure and governance at the homes,” said McKenzie.

The process began with the establishment of a task team and was followed by a Special AGM in August. However, the transition was not without challenges, as disputes arose between members of the previous and newly elected boards.

DCSAW, board members officially opened the wellness centre.

In December, a resolution meeting was held with both parties, during which the Department of Social Development directed that the new board take over the management of the homes with immediate effect.

Since then, the homes have been properly registered under DCSAW, board members have been officially registered, and the non-profit organisation now operates on a fully legal footing.

McKenzie said support from the Department of Social Development, the Community Participation Unit and other government departments played a crucial role in stabilising the institution.

“Today, we can proudly report that facilities have been upgraded, governance is in place, and residents are assured of safety and continuity,” she said.

Addressing guests at the launch, McKenzie described the Wellness Centre as more than just a building. “It is a true honour to stand before you today as we open the doors of the Three Homes Wellness Centre for the Elderly. This centre represents more than just a building, it is a promise of care, dignity and community for our senior citizens. Our elders are the foundation of Ward 31. Their wisdom, resilience and sacrifices have shaped the path we walk today. This centre is dedicated to ensuring that they continue to live with joy, respect and the support they deserve.”

She also paid tribute to the board members who worked tirelessly during the transition period. “I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to the board, who have assisted tirelessly in this journey. Together, we have worked with dedication and determination to reach this important goal. As I cut this ribbon, let it symbolise a new chapter, one of compassion, inclusion and wellness for all who will walk through these doors.” McKenzie added
The homes are currently awaiting documentation from the Housing Department to finalise the renewal of the lease agreement, a move expected to provide long-term security and stability for residents.

McKenzie credited the success of the turnaround to collective effort and unity among stakeholders. “All these achievements were made possible through collaboration, honesty, unity, love and teamwork. We thank everyone who stood firm to ensure that the Three Homes remain a beacon of hope and service in our community,” she said.

For residents and their families, the official launch signalled more than the opening of a wellness centre, it marked the beginning of a new era built on accountability, care and a commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of the elderly.

The launch was attended by residents of the three homes, officials and staff from the Department of Health and the Department of Social development, and neighboring ward councillors. who came to celebrate and witness the event.
