Hank McGregor turned back the clock with Allan Hold as they claimed overall line honours at the Techtisa race as the Siyaphambili Open Open Surfski Challenge series recently moved onto the first of two doubles races.
Hold and McGregor were able to hold off the challenge from Bryce Lawson and Brendon Waters on the two-lap race held on rough seas, with the Siyphambili crew of Kwanele Banda and Lungelo Gumede winning the dice for the last spot on the podium.
The race was memorable for McGregor as he was able to rekindle his partnership with Hold after many years. “It was great to be able to get back into a boat with my old partner from years back. He was super strong and we had a great paddle,” said McGregor.
Hold, who will be racing the Masters Cup in his age group in Portugal, said: “Hank had it all under control so I just had to follow him. It’s a great treat for a seventy-year-old to get to paddle with Hank, so I can tick that off my bucket list.”
After his impressive twelfth victory in the tough Berg River Canoe Marathon, the race was a building block for McGregor as he prepares for the marathon world championships in Portugal at the end of September.
Lyn Bennet and Tracey Nuss walked away with the women’s double ski honours. Jonathan Maehler took the single ski bragging rights from Thubelihle Banda and Paul Cormack. The Simah double ski race wraps up the 2022 Siyaphambili Open Open Surfski Challenge on Saturday, 6 August, starting at 7am.
