World Karate Federation legend, Davide Benetello recently conducted a technical workshop at a recent exhibition at the Northlands Bowling Club in Durban North.

Benetello held workshops for members of the Protea karate team and other karate enthusiasts.

He was delighted with the talent he witnessed in Durban.

“I was impressed by the high standard and strong spirit of karate exponents, in particular the Proteas. I am confident that Durban has what it takes to produce a world champion,” said Benetello.

The former world champion is held in such high esteem that he is the karate representative on the International Olympic Committee.

Karate South Africa (KSA) president, Sonny Pillay was overwhelmed by the interest shown to meet and to learn the tricks of trade from Benetello.

“We will continue to bring world renowned coaches of the calibre of maestro and others in order to assist our athletes in better preparing for the global karate stage. Our intention is to put together a karate squad for the next Olympic Games,” said Pillay.

KSA Technical convenor, Brando Pillay of KSA who hosted the workshops, said the encouraging turnout of children and youths was a good sign.

“It is gratifying to know that our youth are now better equipped technically. They and others learnt a lot from Benetello and will be serious challengers in the Commonwealth Championships in Durban in two months time,” he said.
