Jackie Shandu appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 3 August on charges of incitement of violence. This came after the Minorities of South Africa – MOSA laid charges against him for saying “one Indian one bullet, one settler one bullet’ on the staircase of City Hall last week.
The case was remanded until Friday, 6 August for bail application. Shandu is still in custody.
After his rant outside City Hall, Shandu retracted his words on social media. According to the spokesperson of African peoples Movement (APEMO), the political organization that Shandu belongs to, Shandu made the racial slurs because his niece was shot and killed by Indians in Tongaat in front of him.
Councillor Roy Moodley, leader of MOSA said that in court they represented the community of Phoenix and surrounding areas: “For the sake of nation building, negotiations must take place between all relevant stakeholders in order to restore peace and tranquility. We are asking for calm amongst all race groups. Those that were guilty of criminal activities must face the full wrath of law. There are criminal elements in all race groups. My condolences go to all those that lost their loved ones during this unrest. It is time for reconciliation,” said Moodley.
