Disgruntled residents of Fairview in the South Coast blockaded Umzumbe Main Road with burning tyres, rubble and tree branches at the Ngobheni Bus stop on Monday, 28 February.
The irate residents said they have been hit hard by the current water crisis affecting residents living in the South Coast. They have been experiencing water shortage and water cuts for couple of years now and they saiid, ‘Enough is enough.’ Traffic was severely affected by the protest as vehicles travelling from Port Shepstone were at a standstill. Residents from Umzumbe, Hibberdine, Umthwalume and Phumula were inconvenienced and were also in fear of being injured during this protest. A resident from Fairview, Xolani Mkhize said the lack of water has had a negative turnaround in their daily operations. “We are living in time were having no water has become a normality. As the community we are frustrated and this is evident in the protest that has recently occurred,” said Mkhize. The Ugu District Mayor Cllr Phumlile Mthiyane arrived at the scene and addressed residents which led to an end of the protest. Police and Law enforcement officials were also on scene to maintain calm and order.
