A powerful spirit of unity and devotion lit up the Railway Barracks Shree Emperumal Temple as the community gathered for the inaugural Narasimha Jayanti Bhajan Festival over the weekend— the first of its kind celebrated in the area.
Set to be an annual event, the programme began with Guru Kripa Vayapuri, a respected figure in the spiritual and educational spheres. He formally opened the programme with words of wisdom and blessings, elaborating on the significance of the occasion noting that this avatar of Lord Vishnu was one that is most appeased by true faith and devotion.
This was followed by a vibrant procession from the corner of Equality Street and Montdene Drive to the temple. In a remarkable display of oneness, the participating bhajan groups — without any prior practice with each other — played and sang in harmony as the streets echoed with divine melodies. This spontaneous unity set the tone for the evening’s programme, which opened with a heartfelt welcome by the temple committee.

Hundreds of devotees made their way into the temple with the procession. This culminated in receiving ‘Darshan’, which signifies the act of beholding a deity, especially in image form and in a reciprocal experience where the devotee sees and is seen by the divine, resulting in blessings and a spiritual connection.
A particularly proud moment for the temple was the introduction of the Railway Barracks Shree Emperumal Youth Movement. Founded just a year ago, this youth-driven initiative is rooted in service, culture, and legacy. The group expressed immense gratitude to all bhajan groups present, sharing how deeply humbled and elated they were by the overwhelming support they received. That very support, they said, gave them strength and inspiration to continue their journey.
Following them was the Thirupathie Seva Raam Bhajana Group. Established in 1985 as a Hari Bhajan ensemble, they later evolved to include Raam Bhajans and now feature a dynamic Kolattam group of young girls who bring colour and vibrancy to every performance. Also gracing the stage was the renowned Shree Hanuman Bhajan Group, founded in 1976 by the Govender family. Now in its 49th year, the group continues to uplift and inspire under the leadership of Roland Govender and deputy Sugan Moodley.
The festival closed with the energetic Umhlatuzana Shree Kodhanda Raama Seva Bhajana Group. Established in 2018, this youth-driven group has become known for its discipline, devotion, and growing online presence.
Guru at the temple, Guruparan Gurrukkal extended his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who assisted in making the festivity a success.
“Seeing our youth and the various groups come together is a true representation of what we should be practising in our lives. Thank you to everyone and we hope to see everyone back at our temple for our upcoming events as well as future community-based programmes such as our Women’s Wellness Day which will be open to everyone regardless of their religious beliefs. We will keep the community informed in the months to come,” he said.
