As the world paused to observe International Nurses Day on 12 May, the corridors of Busamed Gateway Private Hospital buzzed not only with clinical care, but also with appreciation, respect and heartfelt gratitude for the nursing staff whose unwavering commitment continues to touch lives every day.
Observed annually on 12 May – the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing – the day serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role nurses play as the backbone of our healthcare system. Under the theme, ‘Our nurses. Our future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies’, this year’s celebrations shone a spotlight not only on the caregiving role of nurses but also on their immense impact on global economy and public health infrastructure. Nursing Manager at Busamed Gateway Private Hospital, Christina Govender said: “Nursing isn’t just a job, it’s a calling. We carry hope into hospital rooms and leave a piece of our hearts with every patient. Nurses are the heartbeat of every hospital, their compassion, professionalism and resilience are unmatched. They offer comfort during life’s mosts vulnerable moments and today, we honour not only their skill but their spirit.”

She said: “While International Nurses Day lasts only 24 hours, the impact of nurses endures far beyond. They continue to navigate challenges, ranging from public health crises to resource shortages yet never waver in their commitment to care. To every nurse reading this, thank you. Thank you for every life you’ve touched and every sacrifice you’ve made in service to others. You are the steady hands in times of crisis, the calming voices in moments of fear and the warm hearts that bring comfort and hope to countless lives each day. Whether in hospitals, clinics, homes or communities, your presence makes a world of difference.”
