Having lived in the area for over 30 years, uMhlanga-born sisters Amy Weare and Jane Bisset have dedicated much of their downtime to their love for upkeeping their community.

It was through their passion that the uMhlanga Promenade Development project was born. “During lockdown in March 2020, we became more aware of the need for safe, clean and functional outdoor communal spaces, where, as neighbours, we could enjoy our beautiful neighbourhood. Our local park, at the one end of the busy uMhlanga Promenade, was barely used as it is very dilapidated and the equipment is unsafe. We knew we had to get involved to really make some changes in this special space,” said Weare, who is the project manager and fundraising head of the initiative. “We wanted to create a thoughtful playground where children can get outside and develop their gross motor skills, confidence, social skills and just get some fresh air. A comfortable space where parents, grandparents and child carers can bring restless kids, while they too can enjoy some sunlight and a good coffee, unwind and socialise,” added Bisset, who along with Weare is currently spearheading the project.

According to Weare, at this stage the project had been fully driven and funded privately with one corporate sponsor so far. “We were thrilled when the team from Araujo Attorneys joined as our first official corporate sponsor, showing how truly passionate they are about the community and local upliftment projects. We have called on locals to help fund this project as we truly believe it is going to be so beneficial for all local residents in the area, as we’re uplifting an under-utilised space that will enhance the surrounding area. Our total target of R130 000 includes a spectacular jungle gym and bike track, fully secured by a picket fence. We have broken up the fundraising into five stages and will stagger the construction as the funds are received. To date we are just R7 000 away from reaching our Phase 2 goal of R45 000. This will allow us to complete most of the jungle gym,” explained Bisset.

Bisset noted how the initiative brought members of the community together, stating that it was amazing seeing all kinds of people from the community collaborating on a shared interest. “It seems that with everything going on in the world, including lockdowns and looting, there is still such an incredible sense of spirit and community, and families are still desperate for connection and camaraderie. We are so thrilled to see this project taking shape, and are convinced of the long-term benefits it will have on our community. Maintaining and uplifting our neighbourhood in whatever way possible is beneficial for all those with a vested interest in the community so we encourage all residents to donate. If there are any corporate sponsors who are interested in getting involved, please contact us,” said Weare.
