Bianca Moodley, a 19-year-old resident of Phoenix, is urgently seeking financial support for her immunotherapy treatment (Pembrolizumab), which costs approximately R1million.

Moodley was diagnosed with Nodular Sclerosing Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in June 2021, leading her to undergo numerous surgeries and cancer treatments at a young age. Speaking to the Phoenix Tabloid, Moodley said: “Cancer has impacted my life greatly, I had to drop out of school to attend regular treatment sessions. I am seeking financial assistance from the community to help with the cost of the course of treatment needed for me to live a normal life. Every donation no matter how big or small will be highly appreciated.”

Dr AGP Jali from the Haematology Clinic explained Moodley’s current situation and how they have exhausted the treatment available at public healthcare facilities to treat her cancer, leading to the family looking elsewhere to save their daughter.

“Bianca Moodley is known to our Haematology Clinic with a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She is refractory to all treatments received and offered at the state facility. There are other treatment options available, however, they are not available in the state. She would need to raise funds to acquire the treatment, namely Pembrolizumab which has shown better results in patients with refractory disease. The cost of the course of treatment is approximately R1 million – your financial support would be greatly appreciated,” said Dr Jali.

Moodley’s parents, Selvan and Sandra Moodley shared their emotional journey following their daughter’s diagnosis and made a further plea for help. “As loving parents of our dearest daughter, Bianca, we humbly request your support, financially or through prayer. In 2021, Bianca went through six months of chemotherapy and four surgeries on the neck area. We were happy when the chemotherapy was done because in February, of the following year, she was cancer free. On 17 January 2023, her biopsy showed that her cancer had returned and she underwent aggressive chemotherapy for two months which did not respond to her. She had a scan which revealed that her cancer is refractory to all lines of treatment in the state sector,” said Mr and Mrs Moodley.

The family is now looking to private healthcare facilities to aid in their daughter’s treatment. “Bianca has constant pain all over her body but she is determined to fight and never give up. It takes a village to raise and save a child, rest assured that you are contributing to save a child that was sent to earth to change many lives – for her dream is to save many people’s lives in the years to come. We thank everyone that will help save our child, may God bless you all,” added Mr and Mrs Moodley.
