In a major push to address nationwide hunger, non-profit organisation Food for Life Africa (FFLA) is encouraging the public to contribute to its 5th Annual Rice Drive. The event is set to take place on Saturday, 27 September, at the River Range Ranch in Verulam, with the ambitious goal of collecting 108 tons of rice.

Organiser Lisa Sukdev said, “When thousands unite around a single purpose, the power of community shines brightest. Every bag of rice we collect means dignity and nourishment for someone in need. This year, we aim higher. 108 tons of rice, bound for families who have had too little for too long. Each 30 kg bag of rice yields approximately 100 servings, so each contribution helps feed many.”

The initiative comes as statistics highlight South Africa’s severe food insecurity crisis. Over 14 million South Africans—nearly one in five of the 63-million population—went to bed hungry in 2024. Sukdev noted that one-quarter to one-third of South African households live below the breadline, with the Stats SA reporting that approximately 683,000 households with children under five reported hunger in 2021. The South African Human Rights Commission also revealed that 28.8% of children under five are stunted and 5.3% suffer from wasting.

To make the event a community celebration, the day will feature an exhilarating showcase of supercars, superbikes, Harley-Davidsons, classic cars, trucks, and live music. There will also be a children’s fun zone and a complimentary lunch for every visitor.

The convoy meeting point will be at Pick n Pay Hyper, Durban North, at 9 am. For more information, you can contact Lisa on 083 937 4171 or via email at lisa@icommunicate.co.za.
