The Pillay family is mourning the loss of one of its daughters, as Angelina Jacob sadly passed away on 26 August. Her passing has left a colossal void and began Spring on a sombre note for her loved ones.
Democratic Liberal Congress (DLC) Leader Patrick Pillay said this day will never be forgotten, describing his sister as a “dynamic unsung heroine.” Pillay believes that her story as a strong woman must be told and revered, noting that her life had changed and enhanced not just his, but his entire family’s. He has often said that he is the person he has become because of the sacrifices his sister made for them.
Jacob was described as a very special person—humble by nature but dynamic in the way she lived her life. A woman of excellence and substance, her caring personality was evident from an early age when she demonstrated her will and principles by placing others above her personal interest.

During her early teenage years, when children are typically focused on their education and careers, Jacob made the greatest sacrifice. Immediately after her father fell ill, she left school to accompany her mother to work and help fend for the family. Her efforts ensured they had food and could pay monthly bills for rent, electricity, and water. According to Pillay, she did all this to ensure the rest of the family could complete their education for a better life.
Jacob was also a community-driven person, always making herself available to serve in projects whenever called upon. Pillay entrusted her with his work, knowing he could always count on her and her children for service delivery. She never sought fame for her work but enjoyed serving the underprivileged selflessly and voluntarily took care of and raised many babies in her neighbourhood.
Pillay said his sister was a person who always rose above all challenges and curveballs that life threw at her. “A person of great resilience and determination. People who knew her will attest to the fact that she was a humble woman with few words but had a great heart of love for all people.” He added that she was a principled person of worth who never faulted in her promise to serve others.
Angelina Jacob is survived by her brother, Patrick, and four children.
