The Margate Art Museum recently hosted the legendary South African saxophonist, McCoy Mrubata at Umngqungqo Wabantu Presentation.
The 63-year-old jazz saxophonist hailing from Cape Town has worked with renowned South African trumpeter, Hugh Masekela. He won the Traditional Jazz Category and Icamagu Livumile at the South African Music Awards in 2003.
Chairperson of Cultural and Creative Industry Federation of South Africa(CCIFSA) Ugu District, Siyakudumisa Sotsu said: “Umngqungqo Wabantu Presentation was first introduced to Gamalakhe TVET College through workshops facilitated by famous South African Pianist, Andile Yenana and McCoy Mrubata. The students get an opportunity to interactively participate in a jazz session with the giants. The process of training exposes learners to better opportunities in the creative sector. It also helps build character in them as professional artists. It also puts the Margate Art Museum on the map as these programmes are socio-economic in nature,” said Sotsu.
Sotsu added that the atmosphere at the jazz concert was electrifying and his stand-out moment was when McCoy Mrubata promised to celebrate his 65th birthday with audience of Umngqungqo Wabantu Presentation. “The build up to this upcoming event will have a series of activities with each aspiring jazz musician,” Sotsu added.
