A dynamic line-up of speakers, addressing pertinent topics affecting the Muslim community, will feature in the tenth anniversary of the Muslimah Today Conference, which will take place on Sunday, 5 November, from 08h00 to 19h00 at the NMJ Islamic Centre in Morningside, Durban.

“With this being our tenth anniversary, we wanted to ensure that the event will be extra memorable,” said Fatima Asmal, Founding Director of the Institute for Learning and Motivation – South Africa (ILM-SA), which hosts the conference under the banner of its ILM for Women division.

Dr Quraysha Ismail Sooliman is a firm favourite with Muslimah Today attendees and will once again speak this year

“We have therefore invited some of the most popular speakers from past editions of the conference as well as reduced the entry fee and moved to a bigger venue.”

Ustaadhah Radia Bawa Hendricks, a haafidhah and Islamic Studies teacher from Cape Town, will advise attendees on how to deal with trials from an Islamic perspective in one of her presentations and expound on calling the Almighty by His various names in another presentation.

Her husband, Maulana Khalil Hendricks, will tackle the subject “Navigating parenting in a rapidly changing world,” while the well-known Imam of the Westville Soofie Mosque, Haafidh Fuzail Soofie, will answer the question: “Pink Barbie or Rainbow Barbie – what’s the pronoun?”

In her two presentations, Dr Quraysha Ismail Sooliman, an academic and aalimah from Pretoria, will tackle the topics “Take back your life: What being Muslim truly means” and “Let’s walk the journey: Preparing for the next life.”

Fazila Chiwele, an activist from KwaZulu-Natal who is passionate about education, will tackle the subject “Fostering a spirit of sisterhood within our community”, while Durban-based clinical psychologist, Dr Nazia Iram Osman, will address a subject affecting almost everyone in her presentation entitled “Mastering emotions: How to not blow a fuse”.

Last but not least, Sumaya Badat, a businesswoman and mom of four, will address an issue often swept under carpets when she details her journey in choosing to stand by a recovering addict in her presentation entitled “Through the haze of addiction: Supporting a spouse in recovery.”
