November, also known as ‘Movember’ to many, is men’s health awareness month and Khanya Hospice along with supporters are rallying behind the cause to encourage more men to get tested for prostate and testicular cancer.

According to the Men’s Foundation, one in every 23 South African men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and on average, five South African men will die from prostate cancer every day with more than 4 300 South African men being newly diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15 to 39 years old, with a five-year relative survival rate of over 95% for men with testicular cancer in South Africa.  Khanya Hospice CEO, Neil McDonald, said that early detection is key to survival. “Men must be made aware of the importance of early detection. We encourage men to get in contact with their GPs or clinics and get tested,” he said. McDonald also invited men to open up the conversation surrounding men’s health with their friends and family.
