Daleview Secondary School, in Rainham, Phoenix was visited by the National Minister for Communications And Digital Technologies, Solly Matsali in recognition of their sustained improvement in the last three consecutive years.
The minister awarded 10 of the best performing Grade 12 learners with mobile devices to help intensify their research abilities and further improve their performance. Speaking about the visit, IFP Councillor, Dr Jonathan Annipen praised the minister’s initiative and called on other government departments to do the same. He said: “First, I am proud to have returned to my Alma Mata on such an occasion, to celebrate the success and dedication of these learners and educators alike. Daleview is special to me not just because it is the school where I matriculated at but also because my dad was a janitor at this giant of an institution. It is no secret that Daleview has had its share of challenges and continues to face it’s peculiar hardships. However, despite the difficulties of being under-staffed, under resourced and often misrepresented, Daleview has always been able to resurface to the top.”

“Personally, I owe inexplicable debt of gratitude to this institution for helping to shape me into the leader I am today. It is also worth noting that Daleview was the first school to open its doors to black learners when it was considered illegal to do so. In so doing, it defied the racial prejudices imposed on South Africans and made it’s own contribution to the fight for democracy. Noteworthy too, is the fact that the first medical doctor in Phoenix was a student at Daleview Secondary School. It is against this background of history that the National Minister makes his visit. I am therefore not surprised, that after a brief season of underperformance, Daleview has once again outshined many of her counterparts achieving a remarkable 97% pass rate in 2024,” said Annipen.
Annipen said that the leadership of the school including its management team and staff must be congratulated for the efforts made to deliberately transform the institution. “I hope that this act of support from the minster will inspire other opportunities for the school both from government and big business. It is my view that schools that display consist progress should be incentivised it will surely promote an ethos of hard work,” added Cllr Annipen.
School principal, Scelo Magwaza, also expressed gratitude to the minister and Annipen for facilitating for such a remarkable project for the school. He further encouraged local leaders and business to partner with the school to transform the school into a modern and technologically oriented environment.
